Lehigh Baja SAE
What is Baja SAE?
The Baja SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) competition challenges engineering students to design, manufacture, test, and race an off-road vehicle. Each competition consists of multiple dynamic events and an off-road race. There are three competitions held each year, in which 100 teams from around the world must prove that their car is safe, well-engineered, cost-effective, fast, maneuverable, and able to endure an off-road environment. In addition to the performance of the car, the team is judged on two detailed reports: one for design and one for cost.
The cars are put to the test with dynamic events, where teams compete in suspension and traction, hill climbing, maneuverability, and more. Each competition ends with a 4-hour endurance race, including obstacles such as creeks, jumps, hairpin turns, and other difficult terrain. When cars break down, teams are expected to use their problem solving skills to perform onsite repairs and get their car back in the race.
Why support Lehigh Baja?
Students participate in Lehigh Baja because they love it. They love getting their hands dirty building and testing the car, and seeing something they were a part of go from a 3D computer model to a fully functional manufactured car. By supporting Lehigh Baja, you are supporting the education of young engineering and business students. Baja allows us to come together and work as a team to simulate a real world engineering challenge. We are applying what we are learning in our classes to get a hands-on experience that could not be replicated in the classroom.
None of this is possible, however, without financial support. The registration fee for the competition is $1,250. Funding is necessary to purchase consumables such as steel, filler wire for welding, gas, and various hardware. We will need to purchase new tools to use in the manufacturing process. Parts for the car such as the differential, CVT, shocks, among many others must be bought in addition to all of the safety equipment. This includes the driver’s helmet, fire suit, goggles, and fire extinguishers. Another large expense will be traveling to the competition and lodging while we are there.
Would you like to support a group of eager students to learn and have your organization's name and/or logo on the 2016 Lehigh Baja car where it will be seen by the thousands of participants and spectators? If so, please look over the levels of sponsorship listed below and the advantages associated with each tier. As a part of Lehigh University, all donations to Lehigh Baja SAE are tax deductible.
